Launch an Android app for your group directory

Most people who join WhatsApp groups do it on their phone. An app puts your directory one tap away on their home screen, sends them back again and again, and looks professional to group owners. The Android app source code add-on for WAGroups makes this a weekend project.

What the app does

  • Browse and search your links, filter by type and category.
  • Open link pages with picture, description and member count.
  • Join a group or channel with one tap.
  • Uses your WAGroups site's data, so every link you approve appears in the app too — there is nothing extra to manage.

What you need

  • A WAGroups site on HTTPS with the Public API extension installed.
  • Android Studio on your computer.
  • A Google Play developer account in your or your company's name.

Steps to publish

  1. Open the project and set your site address, app name, package name, colours and icon.
  2. Build a signed release bundle.
  3. Write a store listing that describes your directory — avoid using "WhatsApp" as the app's name, which is a trademark.
  4. Add your privacy policy address (WAGroups already has one at /page/privacy-policy).
  5. Submit for review.

Promote it

Add a banner on your homepage with a homepage announcement, put a "Get the app" link in the footer, and mention it in your approval emails. Members who install the app come back far more often than visitors from search.

Prefer not to build it yourself? Pepplo Web Technologies can brand, build and publish the app for you as a custom job.
